The UAE climate is one of the most challenging environments for fragrance. Here’s how to wear perfume the right way

Anyone who has lived in the UAE knows the challenge: you spray your favourite perfume before leaving home, and by the time you reach your car it has already faded. The combination of extreme heat, humidity, and air conditioning creates a unique environment that behaves completely differently from the temperate climates most perfumes are designed for. The good news? With the right techniques, you can make your fragrance last significantly longer — without reapplying every two hours.
1. Moisturise Before You Apply
Fragrance clings to hydrated skin far better than dry skin. Dry skin essentially absorbs and dissipates the top notes within minutes. Before applying your perfume, apply an unscented moisturiser or body lotion to your pulse points and let it absorb for a minute. This creates a base that holds the fragrance molecules and allows them to develop properly throughout the day.
2. Apply to Pulse Points — Not Your Clothes
Pulse points are areas where blood vessels sit close to the skin surface, generating natural warmth. This warmth continuously activates and projects the fragrance. The key pulse points are the inner wrists, the base of the throat, behind the ears, the inside of the elbows, and behind the knees. Many people spray perfume on their clothes — this is a mistake. Fabric can distort the scent, stain, and does not interact with body chemistry the way skin does.
💡 Never rub your wrists together after applying perfume. This breaks down the top notes and shortens the lifespan of the scent significantly.
3. Choose Extrait de Parfum Concentration
In the UAE heat, concentration matters more than anywhere else. An Eau de Toilette that lasts four hours in London may last ninety minutes in Dubai summer. Extrait de Parfum, with its higher concentration of fragrance oil (20-40%), is specifically suited to hot climates because the base notes — which are the longest-lasting — make up a larger proportion of the formula. Royal Misk fragrances are all formulated at Extrait de Parfum level precisely for this reason.
4. Store Your Perfume Correctly
Heat and light are a perfume’s two greatest enemies. Never store your bottles on a bathroom shelf (humidity and heat), near a window (UV light degrades fragrance), or in your car (extreme temperatures destroy the formula). Keep your perfume in a cool, dark place — a drawer, a wardrobe shelf, or a dedicated perfume box. Stored correctly, a quality Extrait de Parfum will maintain its integrity for three to five years
5. Layer Your Fragrance
Fragrance layering — applying complementary scents from the same family or brand — creates depth and extends longevity. Start with a scented body wash or lotion as your base layer, then apply your Extrait de Parfum on top. The layers interact with each other and with your skin chemistry to produce a richer, longer-lasting result than any single product could achieve alone.
Why Fragrance Behaves Differently in the UAE
In cold climates, perfume stays close to the skin and projects softly. In the UAE heat, the opposite happens — fragrance projects aggressively for the first hour as heat volatilises the top notes quickly, then fades faster than expected. This is why choosing a fragrance with strong, rich base notes (oud, amber, musk, sandalwood) is particularly important for UAE wearers. These heavier molecules are the last to evaporate and become your signature scent hours after application.
